About Me:ShowThe basis for my own technique comes from the classical technique of the standard (classical) repertoire, so I would stress the value of learning the scales, arpeggios, and finger exercises, as well as developing a robust practice routine. I believe that one learns best from a given piece of music when one devotes the time necessary to memorize the piece, and understand as much about it as one can. Play it in the dark, play excerpts, get away from the piano and try to hear it in your head, do a compositional analysis of the work. Doing these things will give a richness of musical experience, and become permanent lessons you can draw upon later. However, I also believe that the creative impulse is essential to cultivating musical sensibilities. Improv, ear training, ensemble playing, composing, and singing are great ways to sharpen your ear - so I would encourage these activities as well.

About Me:ShowMy 15 years of teaching music, as well as many other subjects, has led me to believe that anyone can learn to do anything well, if they truly desire to excel at it. I have the passion to teach anyone who truly wishes to learn the language and art of music. My students have ranged in age from 3 to 70. Anyone can learn to play music. There is nothing mysterious about learning to read and play music, or to play music by hear, for that matter. I approach each student as an individual who has certain strengths. I first like to build on those strengths and make my students feel successful. After this has occurred, it is time to work on areas where a student might not be as strong, and help bring those aspects of their musical understanding along. I look forward to speaking with you soon about your musical dreams either for yourself or for your child.

About Me:ShowMusic has been a part of my life ever since I was born. I came from a musically minded family where I learned to appreciate and enjoy all types of music. I'm a very versatile musician that loves playing styles ranging from Jazz and Classical to Rock and Top 40 hits. My approach to teaching is all about 'learning through what you love'. I teach all of my students the fundamentals of music (theory, history and technique) but I also like to incorporate their musical tastes and interests in their lessons. Whether I am performing in a band, listening to an album or teaching I always keep in mind that music is fun and meant to be shared with people.

About Me:ShowI like to work with students toward their personal goals with music and create an appropriate repertoire for lessons. I feel it's important that students understand what they are to work on technically, so that there home practice is focused and productive. I get to know my students well enough to understand how they best learn, relate to singing and respond to my suggestions. I also feel that above all creating music is what's most important. I try to focus on emotional expression as a pathway to healthy technique. I am a trained classical singer and have recently fallen in love with singing jazz - two very different, very beautiful art forms. My diverse experience with singing allows students to experiment with different genres.
