About Me:ShowAs a young professional musician, I realize the importance of passing along my passion for music to the next generation. For years now I have been immersing myself more and more in situations where I can learn how to teach well through both observations and instruction on how to teach, as well as through my own teaching. First of all, I know that establishing a relationship with my students is crucial. Music is such an emotional and personal aspect of life that there must be a rapport of trust between student and teacher. So much of the student’s personal life is shown through music, and I as a teacher must uphold this trust. Secondly, a good foundation of music must be provided. When a beginner is learning to play the flute, there is no substitute for the skills of posture, technique, and listening. In the beginning, these three aspects should be taught by the teacher but gradually should be applied by the student so that always good habits are being reinforced while in the lesson and at home. There is value in doing long tones, scales, arpeggios, and other technical studies to strengthen these skills. Beyond this, however, there lays the core of musicianship, which is expressive playing. I promote musicality from the very beginning; beginners can learn how a phrase is like a sentence – it has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and to show true expression a musician must show each of these. As a teacher, I can provide the tools to evaluate music and determine the phrasing, but at a certain point I want my students to discover their own expression and not only imitate what they hear. Music’s power lies in the creativity of each individual and the teacher’s role is to serve as a guide to explore and realize each student’s own manifestation of expression. Each lesson should be fun! The joy of music comes through not only learning to express, but through originality in teaching and learning. I strive to integrate new, exciting ways of teaching into every lesson so that the student never becomes bored with music but always can see new possibilities arising out of the music. There are so many ways to approach each issue in music, and it is best if each way can be fresh, thought-provoking, and enjoyable! Finally, I desire to create a mutual understanding between my students and me in regards to expectations. Every student is different; however, I want my students to be dedicated to learning music and the flute and to set aside time each day to practice what they are learning. Without daily repetition, learning can easily be lost and I do not wish that to happen. I will endeavor to give my students the best guidance I can, and in return I ask that they spend time reviewing what we have gone over as well as working on new things to bring to the lessons the following week. That way we can all be growing in our relationship and in the music that we work on together.

About Me:ShowMusic is an easy thing to love! I strive to take that love and foster it into personal development. Students must apply patience to master the basics, but eventually are rewarded with the skill to creatively express and develop themselves further. It's an exciting process and I love to watch my students undergo it. In addition to the basics, I try to incorporate all aspects of music into my lessons including ear training, music theory, composition, songwriting and improvisation eventually focusing in on the areas found to be the most interesting to the student. Spread the love.
