  • The blues and its connection to jazz.
Intermediate
  • More advanced theory, exploration of modes, non-functional harmony, scales and their connection to chord progressions, playing horizontally or vertically over chord progressions.
  • Transcriptions of bass lines of the greats, analyzing their syles.
  • Expanding rhythmic connection with a drummer, using more non-traditional grooves.
  • Learning songs by ear.
  • Other branches of jazz, such as fusion and latin jazz.
  • Transcribing solos from bass players and other instrumentalists, such as Charlie Parker.
Advanced
  • Advanced theory, such as pentatonic scale relationships and bi-tonal harmony.
  • Creating bass lines and grooves modeled after the great bass players.
  • Exploration of advanced rhythmic concepts, such as odd-meter playing.
  • Work on composition and how song structure relates to improvisation.
  • Transcription and analysis of some of the greats of improvisation, including John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.
