The word saxophone actually refers to a family of woodwind instruments. Most people are familiar with the tenor sax, but there are also alto, baritone, and soprano saxophones. Although the saxophone has made some appearances in modern rock music, it's mostly known as a staple of the jazz sound. Many jazz pioneers such as Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and many others, played the sax exclusively.

Start and stop lessons when you need

At Encore Music Lessons it's understood that no two sax students are the same. Some people just need a quick refresher while others are in it for the long haul. That's why we don't have any cumbersome semester systems or term contracts, so students can start and stop as necessary.

Since your reading this, you're probably considering taking sax lessons. The is saxophone is a very expressive instrument, fun to play, but confusing to beginners. That's why you need a good teacher who will understand your learning style and help you to progress at your own speed.

Where can I take my sax lessons?

Many of the instructors you'll find at Encore Music Lessons go to students homes to give lessons, but if you'd rather go to a teacher's studio that's fine too. After all, the sax is not known for being a quiet instrument - you don't want your neighbors to go bonkers.

You might be wondering what you'll learn...

Well, if you're a beginner, your teacher may start with basics like horn assembly, embouchure technique, finger position, tone control, and note reading.

Intermediate students can study subjects like the chromatic scale, major and minor scales in 12 keys, learning standards, and music theory.

If you're past all of that stuff you might want to know about modes, chord substitutions, blowing overtones, and learning contemporary jazz tunes.

Whether you just bought a sax and don't know what to do with it, or whether you're getting ready to jam with Chris Potter, Encore Music Lessons can help match you with the right instructor!

Student Reviews

Stephanie H.

Ms. Stephanie H. is a great teacher. Stephanie made me feel very comfortable; at ease. I would definitely continue to take my lessons with her. I was able to go to my first singing audition with confidence after going over some music she helped me to choose.

About the Saxophone

About the Saxophone

The simplest design of saxophone is a straight conical tube, and the sopranino and soprano saxophones are usually of this straight design. However, as the lower-pitched instruments would be unacceptably lengthy if straight, the larger instruments usually incorporate a U-bend at or slightly above the third-lowest tone hole.
