Influences: My influences go beyond just music. I'm inspired by any kind of art that comes from the heart. Here are some musicians that come directly to my mind: Jimi Hendrix, The Police/Sting, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eminem, Pearl Jam, Bach, Beethoven, Rage Against the Machine, The Beatles, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, etc.
About Me:
I have a very simple philosophy: learning must be fun. I enjoy helping students discover their unique voice. I work with music that the students love. It gives me great pleasure to be able to explain it to them so that they can gain a deeper understanding and of course build the technique to play it well. I see myself as a guide on the student's journey. I provide them with the tools they need to play from their heart.
Every aspect of music, theory, technique, ear training, composition, reading, etc. is covered in such a way that the student is learning all the basics (and beyond) without being overwhelmed.
Ages:
Elementary School, Pre-teen, Teenage, Adult

Great! - March 1, 2013

Andy was great! He quickly diagnosed my playing weaknesses and helped me think about the neck in a more systematic way. I'm anxious to see where my playing can go with his instruction.

Amazing Teacher - February 5, 2013
By Chloe, Guitar Lessons
Andy is an amazing teacher. He's very kind and patient, fun and easy-going. Andy is a very knowledgable musician and music lover, and is great at picking songs to meet the level of the student. I take lessons with Andy at his studio, which has guitars (so I don't have to bring my own). It is a very pleasant space, central and accessible via public transportation.
Long story short, If you are looking for a warm and friendly teacher who is an expert guitarist and able to teach any level, choose Andy!
Andy Rocks! - November 4, 2012
By Adelmo, Guitar Lessons
My 2 years of having Andreas as my teacher has been incredibly rewarding. Originally I wanted a teacher to show me how to play some of my favorite tunes, met Andreas and what I got was a lesson in music. What to listen for, how to play along and why notes belong together. His style of teaching makes me feel as though I'm as well versed as an experienced musician. His humor and patience makes it comfortable when I'm stuck and he relates music to the experiences of life which makes him a pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend him to anyone who has chosen to learn to play guitar.
Great Guitar Lessons! - November 2, 2012
By A. Hoffman, Guitar Lessons
My son, now 11 years old, has been taking guitar lessons from Andy Altmann for almost 2 years now. Andy has been a truly exceptional teacher and he has instilled in my son a love and passion for guitar. Our son was a beginner when Andy first started teaching him, and we are amazed at how quickly he became a proficient guitar player. Andy is patient and has a good understanding of his student's abilities and what they are capable of learning, and most importantly, he makes it fun! We are thrilled with our son's progress and I would highly recommend Andy to anyone looking for an experienced and talented guitar teacher.
Andreas is an great teacher - October 24, 2012
By Sanjay - Middletown, NY, Guitar Lessons
I grew with friends who played music all their life, and after a month with Andreas they were all amazed by how much I've learned not only playing the chords but understanding what I'm playing and my timing. I'm not saying in one month I knew how to play the guitar, what I'm saying is in one month I can play with my friends because the chords they're playing is not hard and I now know the next chord before they play it. Thanks Andy, and I recommend Andy to anyone who wants to learn how to play the guitar!
Andreas is an excellent teacher! - September 19, 2012
By Allie Glassman - New York, NY, Guitar Lessons
I really wanted to learn guitar when I first started taking lessons with Andreas, but in addition to this Andreas provided me with knowledge that went above and beyond basic technique. Andreas's method of teaching made learning guitar fun and Andreas taught with enthusiasm at every lesson. I would highly recommend taking lessons with Andreas.
A Greater Connection - September 17, 2012
By Marlene - New York, NY, Guitar Lessons
I grew up with a Dad who played guitar. It was part of the home front everyday. For me taking these lessons was a deeper connection to that which was missed so much. Since I have been studying the guitar with Andy, it has connected me to another level of learning, discovering, and gaining more confidence. When I do speak with my Dad, he is also amazed at what I am learning and I amazed that he never studied the art. I now understand many parts of music notes, strings, and more importantly what really moves me. The experience is so worth the time and I am so grateful to my friend who recommended Andy and to Andy who has helped me discover this part of my life...
Thanks Andy
