About Me:
Jon is a Brooklyn based saxophonist and composer. Born in the town of Quincy, MA just south of Boston, Jon became interested in music and the saxophone at a young age, switched to guitar and drums throughout high school, and returned to the saxophone to attend Berklee College of Music as a woodwind principal. There he had the opportunity to study with Dino Govoni, George Garzone, Frank Tiberi, Bill Pierce, and Joe Lovano. In his post Berklee years Jon continued private studies with saxophonist Greg Osby, Joe Lovano, and Lee Konitz, along with drummer Bob Moses. Jon has led his groups and played as a sideman in Boston, New York and all over Japan with such musicians as Francisco Mela, Geoffrey Keezer, David Tronzo, Bob Gullotti, John Lockwood, Eric Harland, and Thomas Morgan, among others. In 2006, he released his debut record, Face no Face, to critical acclaim. He continues to compose, perform and teach privately in New York City.

Music can be fun, too - August 25, 2010

Jon brought back fun to "piano" for our daughter. Although he is a woodwind teacher, he taught our daughter beginning piano. He taught her to loosen up, enjoy the instrument, and enjoy music. We appreciate the fact that Jon was always engaging and engaged with our daughter.

Jon is an amazing teacher--he teaches all FOUR of my kids (one piano, 2 recorder, one guitar) and manages to keep them focused and entertained and learning about music. They love it! This year my oldest (fourth grader) is going to try clarinet. She's already asking for Jon to teach her as soon as we start school again. He is kind, patient and super-knowledgeable--everything you'd want in a great teacher!

My son has been taking saxophone lessons with Jon for a number of years. Jon is a great musician and a wonderful teacher. He is very patient and supportive. I am sure that my son's experience with Jon has contributed to his decision to continue with the saxophone in High School. We are really grateful to have found him.

A Five Star instructor - August 24, 2010
Reviewer: JILLIAN NORTON - MANHATTAN, NY
Instrument: Clarinet
Jon is certainly a "Five Star Instructor". My two children are "Clarinet' tutored weekly from our Manhattan home. Over the last year I have noticed a significant growth in Oliver and Dominics individual skill-set and motivation to enjoy their instrument.
Jon's weekly visits continue to deliver high levels of instruction, specific goal setting and immense motivation to achieve more with greater confidence. These secret ingredients coupled with Jon's relaxed style and amazing humor deliver professional instruction week after week.
Would we ever considering switching to another tutor...definitely NOT!

I think that Jon is a wonderful instructor. He is very patient with my son which is very important. Even though my child is not a musical genius he really enjoys every lesson that he has. He is such a great instructor my family is willing to share him... a little.

Jon is a very patient instructor and a genuine pleasure to work with. He is very accommodating with the time that novices like myself need when practicing. He has a wealth of knowledge that is more than eager to share with you. Always a pleasure!

Great teacher - highly recommend - August 14, 2007

Jon is a terrific teacher, knowledgeable about music and the saxophone and clearly loves what he does. I don't usually get to practice between lessons but still make great strides by virtue of the way Jon imparts technique.

It is a lot of fun and I look forward to every lesson. I am not a serious musician, I don't care about strict reading of the pieces and Jon does not insist I do things properly, as long as I am making progress to where I want to be. I appreciate that. I only want to play songs I know and like, and have them sound recognizable.

If I were serious and really desired to be able to play at a high level, Jon would be choice for teacher again. I highly recommend him.

Jon has great credentials as serious musician. He plays multiple instruments, regularly gigs and is genuinely passionate about a broad range of music. He can provide technical training but also allows for stylistic flexibility, depending on the mood of the music. Gone are the days when you get a crusty old school man making you spend 1 hour a day on scales! He lets me dictate the pace and taste in music, which is perfect for me. As a busy professional, he is relaxed about me having a flexible lesson schedule too. Great teacher.
