About Me:
Hi there!

My name is Max and I’ve been playing the saxophone since I was nine years old. I have since been practicing voraciously in the hopes that I might bridge my idiosyncratic gaps that lay between technique and emotive communication. Aside from Jazz I have also studied European Classical music and Indian classical music in depth and have nurtured a love and respect for both genres. I have also been a teacher since I was fourteen and have taught students of all ages and backgrounds. I love to teach for many reasons. It gives me insights into the nature of my musical thoughts and knowledge as I put them in a communicable form. But perhaps more importantly, it feels amazing to be able to share that which has filled my life with joy and given me a sense of purpose.
I am a graduate of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and I have performed live with many great musicians including Bobby Watson, Antonio Hart, Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Diane Reeves, Alex Sipiagin, Dominick Farinacci, and Paquito D’Rivera. Also, I have studied with Ari Hoenig, Aaron Parks, Aaron Goldberg, Ambrose Ackimusire, Ben Wendel, Walter Smith III, Jaleel Shaw, Marcus Strickland, Andy Milne, Chris Cheek and Myron Walden. I look forward to sharing all that I have learned as well as learning from those that I teach!

5 out of 5 Max Z. - June 27, 2014

By Ben F., Saxophone Lessons

Working and learning under Max was truly amazing, both for his effective teaching abilities and the clear passion he has for playing the saxophone (which inevitably rubbed off on me). He is easy to talk and relate to, and can explain even the most complicated musical ideas/techniques with clarity. He taught me to play music, and not just notes, and for anyone interested in that I would highly recommend him.

5 out of 5 Max Z. - Highly Recommended! - June 27, 2014

By Steve Streett, Saxophone Lessons

I studied Alto Sax under Max Z. for around two years and thoroughly enjoyed it. He was always on time and his manner was warm and professional. As a foundation he employed standard industry instruction books, but also augmented my lessons generously with his own materials and audio files. He was very enthusiastic about discussing theory, history and methods and techniques of the jazz greats. He kept me on schedule with the instruction books but also indulged me in learning how to play pieces of my choosing. I remember mostly his enthusiasm for jazz, his willingness to demonstrate a point, his great ability, and his patience. It was a treat to have studied with Max.
