Voice Teacher

Influences: Musical theater/Jazz: Sarah Brightman (when I was 10 years old), Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand.
Classical: Natalie Dessay (also acting), Anna Moffo, Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas.
There are more for you to to google, but those people are very meaningful and adore to me.

Amanda also teaches piano

About Me:
I know how to teach, and I know how to make it fun! I have been 100% classically trained since the age of 4 (I grew up with a "tiger mom"). I use universally recognized teaching materials for sight-reading, rhythm training, and music appreciation. As a voice instructor, I focus on basic Alexander technique, selecting songs for practice according to each student's voice category and personality. I also coach them in acting, various musical styles, and stage presence based on my experience with musical theater. As a piano instructor, in addition to teaching in a traditional classical style, I am also familiar with the ABRSM and NYSSMA music exams. In the past, my students have received excellent scores and comments on their exams.

As for advanced teaching, I am currently a vocal coach at the Brooklyn College Conservatory, working with professors Richard Barrett and Anna Skinbinsky. My teaching style helps students to open their minds so they can enjoy themselves though music. I enjoy teaching my students helpful ways to think about music, as opposed to just teaching them to execute the right notes. For example I might say "play the piano like you sing, and sing as if you are telling a story!" This is an important part of my teaching philosophy.

5 out of 5 Excellent Piano Teacher - May 11, 2012

By Desiree Truesdale, Piano Lessons

Amanda has a bright and enthusiastic style of teaching. She modifies the instructions as needed without making it too simple and condescending or too difficult and beyond reach. She gives plenty of positive reinforcement and is an encouraging and motivating instructor. Overall she's made it a pleasant learning experience and helped me to overcome my fears that learning the Piano would be too difficult.
